Bulges

Dimensional engineering is the manipulation of reality on the level of the microdimensional. Through this process, it is possible to use distortions in the natural fabric of spacetime to generate bulges. It is perfectly safe and perfectly easy to create totally new universes because each new universe will have its own laws of physics. So, even though most engineered bulges increase in size at incredible rates – after all, the business of creating universes is essentially about generating Big Bangs – there is not usually any contact between this world and that. Dimensional engineering is only possible given three requirements: dimensional sense, dimensional shaping, and training.

Dimensional Awareness
Dimensional sense is the ability to actually perceive microdimensions. Very few novas can do this. The consequences of being able to perceive the world in its microdimensional form are boggling. Only extremely rare minds, themselves probably altered by quantum energies, are capable of fully comprehending the coincidence of eleven or more sets of coordinates in reality without shutting down completely. Novas who can perceive microdimensional space face a serious problem: scale. Imagine being able to see all the things that you are able to see around you already, but in microscopic relief. Your eye would get so caught up in the details that abound everywhere that you would not be able to process all the available data and you would not be able to make sense of the world. Now imagine that your eye could “see” detail not just microscopically, but in d=11, or d=n>11. You would go insane unless you had a way of filtering, buffering, or focusing on only certain segments of reality.

Indeed even most novas who can perceive the extra dimensions must resort to metaphors when describing their experiences in the d=n>3 world. Thus, when the late celebrity nova, Amber “Tracer” MacAllister, claimed that she could read other novas’ powers through their “quantum signatures,” she was actually expressing her experience of being able to perceive the dimensional consequences of other novas’ abilities to manipulate reality. When the Mathematician calculates the future, he is expressly working with theories and proofs generated by his own removed experience of microdimensional space. This does not mean that either Tracer or the Mathematician would have been able to measure space in d=11 without the use of some tools or at least a good formula. Tracer and the Mathematician each overcome both of the problems faced by those with subatomic awareness by developing powers – quantum signature detection and mathematical mastery – that allowed them to focus in on only limited parts of the microdimensional universe.

Dimensional Shaping
Any nova power that moves, manipulates, or creates matter or energy could be rightly considered a kind of dimensional shaping. Novas can manipulate the universe at a molecular, atomic, or subatomic level to increase their size, teleport, start a fire, or turn into a blob. Most novas who have these powers use them reflexively at first, and then learn how to use these reflexes to perform more advanced manipulations of matter. Very few actually refine their control over quantum manipulation to the point where they can do more than generate new variations on the existing gross effects of their abilities. Some novas find that they are able to perform numerous gross manipulations that seem unrelated to one another. Though a full release of her capabilities has never been publicized, Gloria “The Flaming Horn” Kosjeve once admitted that despite years of study at Rashoud Facilities during her stint with Project Utopia America, no one has ever been able to fully understand how her ability to turn into a rhinoceros is related to her ability to burst into flames. “And the first time I was able to read a mind – everyone was like, ‘Well, I guess that makes sense, she is a rhinoceros.' Er, no."

Most novas do not understand how their powers work on the microdimensional level, let alone understand how it is that subatomic energies translate into three dimensional effects. For most novas there is only the will, and then the manifestation of that will as the sudden ignition of a fingertip (Randal Portmann), the extension of a tentacle from a forehead (Tommy “Headworm” Guilfoyle), electromagnetism (Electromagnetism Man), or the secretion of a hormone from one’s lips that can spur plants’ growth (Marcus “Sweet Lips” Brady).

Training
Even if a nova can perceive the universe in its microdimensional fullness and make fine manipulations of matter, then there still remains a demand for some training in building a universe. This training can actually take several forms. One could simply learn physics. Absorbing an adequate volume of physics for this task is quite an undertaking and demands a knowledge of classical physics, string theories, membrane theory, quantum physics, not to mention basic chemistry and biology. A better way is to develop a theory of the world that provides empirical results when applied with quantum technique: love, religion, magic, engineering. The cosmologies of most standard religions (especially Mormonism and Satanism, which both teach that one can become like God), as well as ideas about ley lines, pantheism, spiritism, or any deep awareness of oneself as a sentient being in connection with the rest of the universe all provide methods for understanding how the universe is put together in a way that is manipulable. Hypothetically, any of these could be combined with microdimensional perception and dimensional shaping capabilities to become integral to the process of universe making.
